Portable Sleep Monitoring Workshop
Presented by Dr. Alan Hoffman and Daryl Barnes
Cansleep thanks Dr. Hoffman and Daryl for their excellent presentations and workshops throughout the day. This course was offered this spring for Cansleep staff as well as some of the local CPAP vendors. Dr. Hoffman provided an excellent review of Sleep Disordered breathing and the tools we have to diagnose and treat Sleep Apnea in the community. It was a great success! Look forward to offering more courses in the future.
Coquitlam, BC - Studies have shown that 80% of people with drug-resistant hypertension suffer from sleep apnea (Logan et al. J. Hypertension 2001). This is only one example of the intimate link between cardiovascular disease and sleep. Despite strong clinical evidence linking serious health risks to sleep apnea, the disorder remains widely under diagnosed.
One possible reason for this disconnect is that some symptoms associated with sleep apnea (excessive daytime sleepiness, weight gain, morning headaches, etc.) may be associated with other issues. If the patient fails to mention snoring or pauses in breath during sleep, sleep apnea may be overlooked as the cause. One solution is to provide accessible information about sleep health to the general public and to encourage individuals to ask their physicians about sleep.
